We're strictly mechanical traders. No discretion. Now, The last two trades
we were better pulling the trigger at the close rather than the open, but
otherwise for the last 20 years, we've been better off executing on the open
with our system. Granted the last two trades made money, but with the big
move against us that first day, we left some big bucks on the table.
We don't do any intraday trading at all, other than exiting positions if we
want to take some money off the table. We take positions and hold them
until we reverse. It's very rare that we are not in the market either long
or short. We've never been any good at watching the market and trading
intraday. We do a lot better placing our orders and going to the golf
course to play a round. That way we don't do anything stupid.
On the short side, we trade strictly the QQQ, DIA and the SPY as well as our
S&P futures. For our buys, we have been trading a mini-portfolio of stocks
plus the S&P, concentrating in those industries we know best. We don't buy
any of the .COM non-companies. That's like trying to hit a number on the
big wheel in Vegas, IMHO.
I have to admit, that my first foray into trading stocks occurred on the
biggest down day in NASDAQ history (4/3). I chickened out and closed half
of my positions and took a very expensive lesson. If I stayed true to my
system, I would have made a bunch. So my next buy was on the day that
became the NASDAQ's biggest down day ever (4/18 I think). That time, I
turned off the TV and ignored it completely. Within a couple of days I was
in the black. On this last short, I only entered with half of my capital on
the short side. When it went against me I added to my positions. I still
have some cash available, so if I get an opportunity, I might short some
more.

Congrats on your signal. Are you mechanical or discretionary or both?
Do you use intraday signals for the trade or are you taking a position for
the day?
Did you hold your breath on QQQ in the morning or just pulled the trigger?
