You can go to most internet hosting companies and they will register the
name for you and set up the domain name to point to one of their servers.
If you do this, be sure that the hosting company registers the domain name
in YOUR name and not theirs. Some disreputable ISPs register it in their
name and then try to blackmail you for the name if you ever decide to move
the name for another ISP. Once the site is set up, they will give you
information on how to FTP your webpages to their site and you're in
business. Costs for hosting can range from $25 to $50 a month depending on
how much traffic you expect and how much storage you need. The costs can
actually get much, much higher but it's usually only eCommerce sites that
need that kind of bandwidth. I have had a site with MindSpring for about 4
years, FWIW.

Subject: (OT) Domain Name Question
Even after doing some preliminary Internet research, I'm still a bit
confused....
If I want to have my own domain address, such as, oh, for instance,
www.kormanik.com, how do I go about 'obtaining' this? Is there just one
'business' that handles this application process? Do I have to subsequently
pay for my new domain name on a yearly basis, every year, forever?
Any help appreciated.
