Stupid as it may be, since my boards are initially never fully
populated, I find that prices drop over time, and if I need to
upgrade, I can get the higher capacity chips much cheaper at a later
date, particularly in the after market.

Albeit, that was not the case for a while with the older 4 meg modules
that are still to this day overpriced (fit older printers, and sound
cards).
