Above all, have entries triggered at specific prices, not only
at the OHLC points. I understand the complexities this can introduce
when dealing with combinations of entries, exits, and stops on EOD
data and can cope with them adequately; I don't need Equis to
protect me from them (if, indeed, that is what this limitation is meant
to do, rather than merely saving Equis some programming time.)
Being unable to test breakouts at, say, today's open plus the
average true range of the last N days, or even today's open plus
K points, makes MetaStock useless for a lot of what I want to do.
I have it only because the realtime version is a relatively stable
trading platform. For system testing, I wouldn't even consider it,
based on this one limitation alone.
Marginally less urgent, but still really necessary for my system testing,
would be a database of futures contract specs (editable, of course,
to account for changes), so that futures traders can set money stops
and get test results back as dollars instead of points. Include margins
in the database, and we'd be able to test money management techniques
without having to export trade results to a spreadsheet.
Take care of those two essentials, and we can start talking about
the fine points.
