John:
There will always be frustrations when you push an application to its
limits. By their nature, investors and traders will always demand more in
order to get that little extra edge from an idea or system. MetaStock has a
lot of limitations, but it's surprisingly stable. No matter what, though,
we will always expect more and push the software developer to deliver it.
Despite our expectations and how we abuse their software (and, yes, even in
spite of my own whining), I must say that Equis's technical support team
stands head and shoulders above the competition.
I suppose the answer to your original question is, it depends on your
requirements. I don't know your background, so I'll assume you're just
getting into this stuff. If you're looking for an entry level end-of-day
application, spend some time with TeleChart2000 if it's still free. The
next step is more complex end-of-day system development, and I'd suggest
MetaStock EOD 6.52. For an intraday, realtime platform, you'll have to
spend some money and *a lot* of time to see what's right for you --
there's TradeStation (lurk in their email list before you commit) and
MetaStock Pro, of course, but also check out TraderWare. For the more
leading-edge stuff, you'd have to talk to the Excel, Visual Basic and neural
net gurus here.
Oh, and a lot of education in between each step. Entry systems are only one
small component in an overall plan.
