Just had a chance to post this, but we went long last night and this
morning. This trade was a costly loser (I don't want to say how much) but
we still have to go with the flow as the system is still running 85%+
correct. Thankfully, we kept to our money management techniques and didn't
add new positions on the way down.
We'll need another bunch of winners to cover this 100+ point S&P loss (not
counting the QQQ, SPY and DIA positions which we closed out a while back).
All I can say is thank goodness the previous 8 trades before this one were
profitable, so we didn't give back any of our money. <G>

Hello,
In the current (Dec.) issue of PC World there is a column titled
"Stop Hackers Before They Attack"
(p.51) . It mentions a recently launched site that checks your PC
"shields" and scans ports (go to
http://grc.com/default.htm and click on "Shields Up" banner)
regarding their vulnerability. Port
#139 on my machine turned out wide open to something horrible; my
ignorance on the subject
doesn't allow me be more specific describing the horror <g>).
Anyhow, I used a free utility from
the site to close that bloody port #139.
The site provides also quite a bit to learn about these things I've
never wanted to know of,
frankly.
Surf safe. Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm not one to say "We told you so," but ....
You probably identified and eliminated one of the Windows "exploits," but
incidentally the NetBIOS ports (including 139) are some of the favorite
ports for hackers and script-kiddies. You should probably do a virus scan
(I use Norton AntiVirus) and a trojan scan (I like The Cleaner from
www.moosoft.com ) to ensure you have no lingering, malicious applications.
You can (and should periodically) use the DOS command 'netstat -an' from an
MS-DOS window to see what ports are listening for a connection. For more
information on this, see http://www.commodon.com/threat/frame.htm
Also, consider a firewall (yes, Ken and Walter, I am climbing onto my
soapbox again) for a higher level of protection. As a temporary measure,
check out a freeware application named NukeNabber to at least monitor the
more vulnerable ports. Download it from a reliable site like www.tucows.com
because there are hacked versions out there.

Glen,
Thanks! I'll check out the sites you gave. To be honest, so far I've been
procrastinating on a really good virus-Tojan-worm-... (what else?)
protection.
For weekly checks I use Trend Micro HouseCall, i.e. doing it through the Web
(it's on http://housecall.antivirus.com if somebody interested).
It caught a
couple weeks ago a dormant Trojan on my HD. So, no round-the-clock sentinel
yet. Not sure about a firewall, since mine is a single machine, File/Printer
Sharing is off , how much more protection does one need then? O, certainly,
it's not to doubt sense of a firewall, but the question reflects rather my
inner struggle I know I am losing trying to escape an obvious need to do
something more on this virus-shmirus stuff <g>.

Just to give you an update (especially for those of you that are also

printer driver (which apparently effects the Print Preview section) is no
longer sufficient for Metastock charts. Although I do have the printer
driver for Windows 95, it is too old for Metastock & I'll need a newer
printer. If anyone has a "newer" printer, I'd love to hear if you have
similar problems. A new printer can be expensive - especially if it
doesn't solve my problem. Thanks again.

I am not even close to being knowledgeable about this, but Windows has
many "holes" in it other than TCP/IP file and printer sharing. After
reading the last few days about this topic, I am surprised that someone
hasn't yet succeeded in shutting down most unprotected networks and any
unprotected pc running Microsoft windows in
the US or anyplace else for that matter.
You might consider an application like BlackICE Defender from
http://www.networkice.com . I found out about it from PC Magazine and
have been using it for several days and am very surprised at the amount
of system scanning that goes on - some of which is coming from other
customers on my ISP. BlackICE Defender acts as a firewall and port
defender amongst other things and does tracing to find out where the
scanning is coming from and puts the information in "evidence files" for
reporting to ISP's. There is an interesting page to read about how
BlackICE functions at:
http://www.netice.com/Advice/Support/KB/q000005/default.htm
I am also looking at "Sonic Wall" from www.sonicwall.com which is a
rather elegant solution instead of other very expensive alternatives.

Heidi,
Have you contacted your printer manufacturer to request the latest driver?
If your printer manufacturer has a website, it will have driver updates
there, as a rule. Also, I believe MS has an update repository for driver
files. The same information applies to video card drivers.
I ordered the ver 6.52 CD this week, and was told that ver 7.0 EOD will be
available by year end or early into January. If I have interpreted this
correctly, this should mean by late spring/early summer. Hang in there.

List -- Sorry the last post was meant to be a private email.
Anyway ... Here's a sub Lars that it wanted to include ... It can either
accept User Input or can be hard coded for Start and Stop dates. Will tinker
with it and let you know. Sometimes the desired date falls on a weekend and
the sub would then have to loop through to find the Friday date or the
Monday date.
Best regards
Walter

All,
I decided to make Cabletron Systems (CS) that is in the Computer =
Networking Sector a midweek pick. CS develops, makes, markets, installs =
and supports a broad range of standards-based local and wide area =
network connectivity hardware and software products. It had a rough =
couple of years in 1997 and 1998 due to antiquated hardware, but now =
seems to have its problems behind it with its well-accepted new switches =
and routers.
CS at 24.31 is in a Short Term Up Trend Channel (STUTC) with the =
top at 28 1/8 and the bottom at 22. It hit an all time high of 46 =BD =
way back on 03/28/97 then went into a two year down trend to a double =
bottom around 7 in September 1998 and again in April 1999. It started =
an Intermediate Term Up Trend Channel (ITUTC) from that second bottom =
and then broke out of the top of that (ITUTC) in early November to form =
the new, steeper STUTC. CS is now recovering from the second pullback =
to the bottom of the new STUTC and should be at a good entry point. The =
Tema Binary Wave and Qstick are both positive and rising. The =
fundamentals are OK with price/sales at 3.18, no debt, and earnings =
growth predicted at triple digit rates for the next couple of years. =
I'll open a position for the $100k Portfolio at Friday's open. I'll set =
the initial target just under the all time high at 46 and the stop just =
under the STUTC at 21 =BE.=20

Subject: Three amazing channels
Just thought I'd share these three charts, JDSU, QCOM, and CSCO.
All three stocks were in nicely defined channels for six months or
more, and then broke out the top of them in the last week or so.
http://www.white-crane.com/stocks/jdsu.gif
http://www.white-crane.com/stocks/qcom.gif
http://www.white-crane.com/stocks/csco.gif
JDSU is in a new, steep, up-channel. I don't know how long it can
last. QCOM and CSCO may start using the top of the old channel as
support. Too soon to tell.
As you can see from the buy arrows, I've been buying these after they
bounce off the bottom of the channel. CSCO I've owned a long time,
but I've been buying more. Sure wish I got into QCOM earlier.
Fundamentals for all three of these companies are great. Especially
for JDSU, which makes optical components for fiber-optic networks. I
think CSCO just reported a 49% yty growth in sales. JDSU has
something like 100% yty growth.
The stocks may be over-extended right now. But it makes sense to buy
them on any dips. These are three companies that will be growing
earnings for a long, long time.
As always, do your own research. But these are worth checking out.

Windows 98 Information
If you are upgrading your computer to Microsoft Windows 98 from
Windows 95, The Hewlett Packard LaserJet printer software that you are
currently using for Windows 95 is compatible with the Windows 98 Operating
System. There is no need to obtain new drivers. If you were successfully
printing with Windows 95 software and have upgraded to Windows 98, you
should experience the same degree of success.
NOTE: All HP LaserJet printers prior to the HP LaserJet 4 printer were
not sold with HP driver software. This includes the original HP LaserJet
printer family, the HP LaserJet II printer family, the HP LaserJet III
printer family, and HP LaserJet 2000 printer. The printer driver for these
products is included with the Windows 98 operating system. Use the ADD
PRINTER wizard to install that print driver.
See additional printer specific information below.
If you are adding an HP LaserJet printer to a Windows 98 system, the
Microsoft printer mini-driver will automatically be installed by the Windows
98 "Plug and Play" feature. HP printer software is not required for printer
setup when the "Plug and Play" feature has been activated. EXCEPTION: When
using an HP Color LaserJet or HP Color LaserJet 5 series printer in Windows
98, the Hewlett Packard Color LaserJet Windows 95 drivers must be used
instead of the drivers automatically installed by Windows 98. If you wish to
install the HP printer driver software, you can download the software from
the Web and follow its instructions, or you can use the appropriate floppy
disk or CD and complete the following setup process:
a.. Insert 3.5 " floppy Disk #1 or CD into appropriate drive
b.. Run *:\setup.exe (* is "a" or "d" drive)
Arabic Drivers:
The Arabic version of Windows 98 will not be available until the Fall
of 1998. Information regarding the Arabic driver and Windows 98
compatibility will be available sometime in the Fall. New information will
appear on this page as it becomes available.
Asian Drivers:
Asian versions of Windows 98 will not be available until on or after
July 25, 1998. Information regarding the Asian drivers (Japanese, Korean,
Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese) and Windows 98 compatibility will
be available in mid-July. New information will appear on this page as it
becomes available.
Hebrew Drivers:
The Hebrew version of Windows 98 will not be available until the Fall
of 1998. Information regarding the Hebrew driver and Windows 98
compatibility will be available sometime in the Fall. New information will
