Subject: 6.52 Update Problem

> I downloaded the 6.52 MetaStock EOD patch (MSW652.EXE,
4.72MB) and ran it,
> but encountered a problem.
>
> At 37%
Overall completion, when it said it was "Processing Mswin\MSWIN.EXE",
>
the update program just terminates, and appears not to have accomplished
>
anything.
>
> Do any of you have a suggestion as to what may be the
problem?

The problems are described on the "updates.html"-page(see at
the bottom), and only relate

to the Patch not being able to
find the right files or Registry-entries.

> The only thing I can think of is that I
replaced the motherboard on this
> machine, and doubled the memory, a few
months back.

Is not relivant here.

> Do you think I should just re-install. I
fear losing my set-up going that
> route, and hope the problem is
something else I'm overlooking.

Fear not, there are also good sites to it. From re-installing (several times) you will get to know

the program better and better,
and you will now know where all the (optional) settings are to

be found too. If you haven't re-installed
recently, you will also finaly get a cleaned out set
of

main folders, sub-folders and dta-files
(eg the "C:\Equis\....\....." set of factory default-folders

This patch will upgrade anyone with MetaStock for Windows End-of-Day
version 6.5. This will work on any 6.5 install or from any previous 6.5
patch. This patch contains the Euro and Y2K adjustments and will update your
version of The DownLoader to 6.52 also.
(dated 2/8/99, 4.8

We recommend everyone owning MetaStock for Windows 6.5 use this patch. To
find out if you own this version choose About from the MetaStock Help
menu.

Download the file and double-click on it. The patch will install
automatically. Once it is installed you will receive a message telling you the
programs were successfully patched. After the patch has installed, reboot your
computer to run MetaStock for Windows.

This Patch will patch open files. If you inadvertently apply this patch
while MetaStock is running the patch will continue and tell you that you must
reboot for the changes to take affect. When you reboot the files that were
open will be updated. Note: If you do not reboot and try to run MetaStock for
Windows, it will not run correctly.

Please note the following to try and avoid problems when utilizing this
patch:
If you upgraded version 6.5 to version 6.52 with a previous
patch and then re-installed version 6.5 to a new different folder this patch
will update the version 6.5 in the new folder. It WILL NOT update the previous
patched 6.52 version because it will look at the 6.5 registry key to find
version 6.5. This will point to the new folder not the old 6.52 folder. This
patch will give you a complete version 6.52 in the new folder...

However, if you have deleted the registry entries and have not re-set them
by entering the Tools|Options dialog and pressing OK or by re-installing
version 6.5 then this patch will probably fail. If you have a problem with
this patch, and you are certain you downloaded the entire file (4.8 Mb) you
should uninstall version 6.5 and reinstall it. Then, run this patch to bring
you to version 6.52.

patch to update from version 6.5 to version 6.52, you should reinstall version
6.5 and utilize the full patch. This patch contains fixes for the "Date
requested is after the last date in the data" error when opening charts. This
patch also corrects a problem in The DownLoader for Windows 95 & NT
"Traverse Destination Folders" during conversions as well as the conversion of

Most patches are full program files in a compressed format. When you
double-click on the patch, the files uncompress and replace the existing
program files. Other patches are mini-applications that fix a small
problem in an existing file. Most Equis patches are of the first variety.
All patches need the full version of the program be installed on the hard
drive before they can run.

Errors

All Equis patches will congratulate you upon completion. If you run a
patch and do not get a message that says your program has been updated,
something went wrong.

Some errors when running a patch are due to an incomplete download of
the patch file. To verify you downloaded the complete patch, compare the
size indicated on the web site with the file that is now on your hard
drive. If the description of the patch on the web site says the patch is
2.1 mb and the size of the file in Windows Explorer is 2,122 KB, you
downloaded the full patch. If Windows Explorer says the size is 1,423 KB,
there was an error downloading the patch and you need to try downloading
it again.

Another common error when running a patch is missing files or
information. A patch looks for the files it is supposed to replace, and
also looks for information in the Windows registry. If a file or registry
entry is missing, the patch will quit without completing its installation.

With both of these errors, part of the patch will run, but you will not
get a congratulations message at the end. When this happens, first check
the file size as described above. If the file size is correct, you will
need to reinstall the original product, and then run the patch again.

Installing the patch

All of the patches posted on our web site this year will install from
anywhere on your hard drive. Earlier patches did need to be placed in the
appropriate folder before being run. Check the patch description to see
which type of patch you are downloading. If it is a new patch, the easiest
thing to do is save it to your desktop and run it from there.

When the Save As dialog appears, click the Up One Level button (the
yellow folder with an upwards pointing arrow) until the Save in: box at
the top says Desktop.

Verify that the filename is the name of the patch.

Click Save, then wait for a message indicating that the download is
complete.

You should then see the patch on your desktop. Double-click on it,
and the patch will do the rest.

If it is an old patch that needs to be run from a specific location,
follow these steps:

When the Save As dialog appears, click the Up One Level button (the
yellow folder with an upwards pointing arrow) until the Save in: box at
the top says My Computer.

Navigate to the appropriate folder. (If the patch needs to be run
from C:\Equis\Dlwin, double-click the C: drive, then double-click Equis,
then double-click Dlwin.)

Verify that the filename is the name of the patch.

Click Save, then wait for a message indicating that the download is
complete.

Now double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop and navigate
to that folder. (repeat step 2 - double-click C:, then Equis, then
Dlwin)

Double-click on the patch file to run it.

Haven't looked at it, but also the use of the (still manualy)
