CMA,
I use QP. The download works pretty good. For all US stocks
it takes about 3 minutes at 50K. The data is incorporated automatically
and exports in actual Metastock data are also done automatically.
For the latter you define the tickers. The QP stock database is 367 MB's.

They have a program called QPVirtual which allows Metastock to transparently
access most of their database without any exporting. Again, you define
the tickers which are in their "Virtual" folders. This process
is different from exporting because QPVirtual is actually accessing the
QP database, not true MetaStock data. Although your Virtual database
may have 7000 tickers, it takes little space on your drive. Also,
you don't have to make ticker or split changes. Users typically use
1 command to place QP's "IRL" stock database into the "Virtual" folders,
about 7,000 tickers. These are all the US stocks which are in the
IRL database. You may also add other tickers which are new and have
not been incorporated into the IRL database yet. These are usually
'Net stocks for me. If you create composites,
for those tickers use exported data, not Virtual.

For most users, QPV seems to work. However, on my machine after
I upgraded to MetaStock v6.52 EOD (latest build) and Windows 98 in December,
I began to have freezing problems. In late November I did place another
2,600 tickers into the Virtual folders so this may have caused it.
I removed those tickers and also my CONFIG.SYS (CONFIG.SYS has 16 bit drivers)
and have reduced this freezing. Before it used to freeze for about
90 seconds. Now it freezes for about 3. This freezing begins
after I have moved the MetaStock chart around (X-axis) or zoom in and out.
Once it begins, it will refreeze with more frequency until I reboot.
Exiting Metastock and QPV does NOT help. This seems to indicate a
memory handling problem with QPV.

I think the reason this is happening is because I have an Aladdin V
chipset. This is a Super7 motherboard with an AMD K6-2 CPU.
The K6-2 uses 3DNOW! enhanced drivers and QP may not have tested this combination
yet. I have the following:
MetaStock v6.52 (any build)
Windows 98
ALi AGP core driver for Windows 98 (ALi and Aladdin are trademarks
of ACER Inc.)
Matrox Mystique G200 AGP 3DNOW! enhanced driver
Microsoft DirectX v6.1 (3DNOW! support was included in v6.0)

I have upgraded ALL of the above to try and fix this. There are
so many drivers in Windows 98 all loaded at the same time, it is difficult
to tell where the conflict is. However, I have already done everything
possible to try and fix this problem, including changing to Microsoft's
"Standard VGA Driver." Something I noticed
when I exit the QPV Setup program, my system responds very slowly for 2
minutes as if something was still in memory and the CPU's working on it.
I think QPV and its Setup program need to be optimized (rewritten) for
Windows 98 but no one at QP seems to acknowledge it. In addition,
I believe they need to rewritten so they are faster. It used to be
the slowest 5% of a commercial program was written in assembly. I
don't know if they do that anymore, but I sure wish QP would.

If you have a standard Pentium or Celeron system, especially with a
nVidia Riva TNT video card, I doubt you will have this freezing.
If you sign up with QP, set up your Virtual database, and start noticing
a momentary freezing please let me know.
