Betreff: MS652a - Patch : Updating of Video drivers

After applying the latest patches, suggestions were made by Equis
Support for those (incl. myself) who are
having problems, to upgrade their video drivers from their hardware
manufacturers. This most certainly is true,
however it did not fix any of my problems. The latest 652+652a Patches
of Jan26 and Feb08 1999 however
did the trick on my computer.
Some odd video performance remained however, and besides from the above
652Patch informing my
video-card manufacturer for a newer driver version and also from using
the latest succesfull Metastock program
and the latest IE50 and OE50 programs, has had me realised that there is
more to it, to get my screen to operate
and function as it should be. Problem here is that sometimes when
scrolling the pages up and down in windows,
the screen jumps to refresh the page again(not smoothly), disturbing any
normal viewing for only a 1 or 2 seconds.

Among the manufacturers, Microsoft should also be included, eg being the
Operating System's manufacturer
and thus inter-acting/communicating with the hardware manufacturer's
equipment(s) and software packages.
So below is the information for a free upgrade to version 6.1 of the MS
DirectX application, which prior versions
in the past were standard shipped along with the video-card
manufacturer's software. To my knowledge most
people have DirectX v3.1 (or higher) installed on their computers, and
currently DirectX v7.0 is in its final (?)
beta-testing phase, and the finalising commercial release version 7.0
will be shipped out with the Windows2000
OS-program(NT5.1+), due to be released around October 1999.

Ton,

with an old graphics card (Diamond Stealth 64 Video with S3 968 Chip) thin
blue lines of indicators in inner windows were invisible.
As I had already the latest driver in use no solution was in sight but to
buy a new graphics card. Now I run a fast new graphics card (3D Blaster
Banshee PCI) on my old PC and I like the enhanced speed. No more graphics
probs with Metastock.

But I have some doubts that Direct X is the reason of the graphics problems.
Do you know for sure that MetaStock calls DirectX resources?

can you explain a little more in depth what you miss regarding poor file

Instead of being a "patcher" ... I am now a "patchee".

All of my hand loaded funds and indexes (200+) drop to zero on the "new day"
after the last entry. The existing chart and indicators are still intact
when the "new day" is advanced off the screen.

I read Ton's long description of proper precautions a well prepared
"patcher" should take but I'm not prepared to go that route. I have
downloaded regular (i.e., 10 to15+) patches and upgrades from Omni Trader
and have never seen anything like this "2 month" mess and disruption of
traders lives.

The latest futures magazine has a single page article about why pro traders
don't use canned systems, but use programming languages and Excel etc. to
develop all of they're own systems tests. This latest "difficulty" has
pushed me more in the direction of Excel and Visual Basic rather than toward
either Trade Station or Metastock or whatever.

Best regards

poor file handling.

here are the issues I think characterize MS format versus some its
competition.

2,000 security per directory limitation.

inability to browse charts across multiple metastock dirs as Advanced Get
allows

Slow to Moderate Performance

Poor utilization of space using MS format compared to others.

I've patched w/out a problem of any sort, how can I answer to the second
question
about better trading? I do the trading, not Metastock or any other program,
they
help if you find them of help, I don't believe there is any "magic" program
out
there, the day
I'll create it I shall not sell it (until it works). It is simply easier and
faster
to plot charts and use all the indicators with a computer and a piece of
software
than to use paper, pencils and calculators, I think that's all to it. And
Equis
beside being not too clear about patches and releases is not doing a bad
job, this
list is a very good one and so it's the software that they produce( still
using MS
DOS 4.0 beside MS 6.52) IMHO, no commissions for saiyng so(;-)
Good trading.

Frans,

I think you're right on target with these observations and I share your
practiced skepticism. What's with all this patch fix-ation anyway? My
calendar says 305 days to Y2K or 12 more patches at Equis' current run

As far as I know, there are no plans to make Y2K compliant data bases
available to MS for DOD. I have updated DL with the latest patch which
supposedly makes it Y2K compatible, so I need to run a test using MS for DOS
with the new data and see if it works.

The latest full patch corrects this. The previous patch dated 1/22/99
(program build date in Help, About of 1/21/99) fixed this also. You
will need to select Chart Window Properties and select Price Change as
one of your title choices.

The a will not show up in a version number. The version will be 6.52.
The build date will be February 5, 1999.

I am talking about the Chart Title Bar Last Price. This shows Last Price
with change on Daily display, but without change on Weekly, Monthly,
Quarterly, Yearly.

The Inner Window Title Bar Price display correctly shows the changes on
Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly. We choose not to have Inner Window
Title
Bars displayed to get more data on the screen.

You identified this problem on 6Jan99 (see below). Can we please have
the
problem fixed.

Also can you please advise if my version in Help About should be
updated to
V6.52a after
the "a" patch?

Equis

I'm a little confused here. I downloaded the latest patch (via ADSL at
about 30KB/sec) and got a download successful message from IE. The file
size is 4.72MB or 4,959,413 bytes (4,960,256 bytes used).

According to your post, my download doesn't equal your file size and is
therefore suspect. It's actually larger than the numbers you posted.
My
patch never gave me the completion message and when I tried to run it, I
had
a missing DTA file. I received the missing DTA file via this group and
copied it in and now everything appears to work. Now, I have to admit
that
I'm still using MS 4.5 since the conversion of my code never made the
conversion to v6.0. I'm going to try to recode my stuff one last time
and
see what happens. In 6.0, MS got caught up in a lot of disk trashing
and
after a while I just gave up on the conversion.

If, in fact, my installation of the patch failed, what do to recover?

Regards

Guy

Yes, there is a batch file running at that point. What it is doing is
looking at the registry. If it can't find what it is looking for the
batch quits and the patch continues. I suspect, in many cases, those of
you having problems at 37% have large registry files and the search is
going on, but you may think it has stopped.

The documentation from RT Patch (Pocket Soft) tells you how to use batch
processes. If batch processes aren't to be used they certainly wouldn't
tell you how to do it.

In most of the cases we have found, the reason the patch doesn't work is
because it isn't a complete file after you download it. The patch will
start because the patch executable code is up front. But, it won't
finish because the entire code needed isn't available in a partial file.
If you don't get the congratulations message, the patch is not complete.

The current MSWIN652.EXE patch is 4844 KB (4.5 megabytes). If the size
is different on your drive after downloading it, you didn't get the
complete patch and it will fail.

The MSWIN652A.EXE patch is simply there for the people that already
utilized the 1/22/99 MSWIN652.EXE. It fixes a problem we hadn't yet
fixed in that patch. The MSWIN652.EXE file currently available contains
the fix in MSWIN652A.EXE.

We have thousands of customers who have used our patches successfully.
We also have some customers who have not been able to use our patches
successfully. I don't think it is necessarily the patch.

I accidently discovered that the problem appears to be that the patch can't
"read", "handle", whatever, ... the manual holiday (i.e., 32767) input.
When the holidays are deleted manually from the downloader file everything
works fine.

Moral of the story: ... If you manually load files that have holidays or
closed markets ... don't download the patch until it's fixed.

You don't need the MSWin652a.EXE patch. You have the latest build date.

Hello

I installed the patch Msw652.exe (4.8 MB) last night to update from
v.6.5 to v.6.52 and it worked perfectly.

Then I installed the patch Msw652a.exe (587 kB) to update to v.6.52a,
but I only saw the install-screen in my attachment for a brief moment
and nothing else. No congratulations or anything. So I assume that
v.6.52a has not been installed ?

In About under the Metastock help menu, the version is indicated as
v.6.52 and the build date as Feb 5 1999. Is this correct ? Shouldn't
it be indicated as v.6.52a if the install was successful ?

Thanks

MetaStock for Dos may run after January 1, 2000. However, there have
not been and will not be any code changes made to make indicators, etc.
work past December 31, 1999. We will not support the product after

If you continue to use any MetaStock version prior to version 6.52 of

As far as I know, there are no plans to make Y2K compliant data bases
available to MS for DOD. I have updated DL with the latest patch which
supposedly makes it Y2K compatible, so I need to run a test using MS for
DOS
with the new data and see if it works.

- ------------------------------------------------

Below are the results of our weekly "Guess the Dow" sentiment
survey. The survey was taken from 2/15 through 2/21 on the
Lowrisk.com web site.

Number of participants: 436

30 day outlook:

50% bullish, 46% last week
33% bearish, 39% last week
17% neutral, 15% last week

(percentages may not sum to 100 due to rounding)

Median guess for the DJIA closing value on Friday, 2/26: 9295 (it
was 9307 last week). More complete sentiment data is available at
<http://www.lowrisk.com/sentiment.htm> .

Last week the DJIA had a relatively modest gain of 65 points, and
our sentiment numbers grew more bullish. The bulls gained 4% to 50%
and the bears dropped 6% to 33%. The neutral camp stayed almost
even, picking up 2%. This is one of those weeks where it is
difficult to read much into the sentiment data. However, we are
coming off three weeks of essentially sideways action in the market,
and the bulls are at relatively high levels, so the numbers would
seem to call for some caution.

Please stop by to take part in this weeks survey at:

Hello Walter,

Before you start your purging hand-job <G> please take a look at pg. 30 of
the MS EOD 6.5 handbook.
It might be interesting to read what it says about showing/not showing
holidays and weekends in the charts.
Or are these possibilities vanished in the 6.52 version ?
Best of luck,

Frans

Patch worked for me first time and I have so far not had any trouble.
I remember the recent problems many had with W98 upgrades, and I had
no problems there either.
I suspect that existing system defects are causing many of the
problems. I use the W98 version of Norton Utilities to continuously
monitor my system, and correct them as soon as they occur and my
system has remained in good condition.

I don't think you understood my message.

Chart Title Bar Last Price gives both Last Price and Change on Daily
display, but only Last Price on Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly.
I want both Last Price and Change to be displayed on Weekly, Monthly,
Quarterly, Yearly also.

Selecting Chart Title Bar Price Change gives only the Price Change not the
Last Price as well.
Also I want to display last date on the right, so please don't suggest using
that.

Surely if both Last Price and Change works for Daily display, it should work
or can be made to work for Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly also.

Cheers
Ian

What warranty is provided regarding the results of calculations made with

All,
Not a bad day <G>. I wasn't surprised when my buy stop for CSCO was
hit at 98 5/8, but I was definitely surprised when my buy stop on AOL was
hit at 165 1/8. That was 5 points above Friday's close so I didn't even
send the AOL chart out Saturday. Then it went on and gained another 8
points after it hit my buy stop. Talk about momentum!
HD didn't hit my buy stop, but WMT barely closed at a new all time
high. Therefore, I'm going to cancel my GTC buy stop on HD and buy WMT in
the morning instead.

Equis

I ran MS 4.5 today for the first time against the results of the Downloader
6.52 update and all worked fine. since I don't use any of your indicators
or experts and just process my own indicators, I'll be a happy camper as
long as it keeps the data in the proper sequence.

I'm still going to try and convert my stuff one last time before just
relegating MS to a charting program and using Visual Basic or whatever to
run my system.

MetaStock for Dos may run after January 1, 2000. However, there have
not been and will not be any code changes made to make indicators, etc.
work past December 31, 1999. We will not support the product after
December 31, 1999 either.

If you continue to use any MetaStock version prior to version 6.52 of
MetaStock for Windows 95/NT or MetaStock Professional, we will not
provide support nor will we make any warranty regarding the results of
any calculations.

As far as I know, there are no plans to make Y2K compliant data bases
available to MS for DOD. I have updated DL with the latest patch which
supposedly makes it Y2K compatible, so I need to run a test using MS for
DOS
with the new data and see if it works.

Hi Ton

Here's one for your "well-prepared patcher" file.

Walter,

First of all, Thank You for taking the time to send the file in to us,
so we can find the problem and get it handled. The more that I
investigated this problem, the stranger the results. I can now see the
issues that you seeing (showing the last bar with the first date values,
etc.) and have passed the files on to the programmers to find out what
the exact problem is. As soon as they get some information, they will
pass it to me, and in turn I will forward the information to you. The
only work-around for now is to delete the rows with Holiday in the
fields.

As soon as I hear from them, I'll email you again.

Thank you for your patience,

I found that 10 or 11 "new" fund charts that only have 3 weeks of
manually
loaded data and without holidays, work fine.

I open a "new" file of "Metals & Minerals" in Downloader and called it
"M&M"
and copied data from today back to Dec. 1, 1998 (3.5 months). It
produced a
flat line chart.

Then I went into the data and deleted all of the rows that were
holidays.
Everything worked fine!

So obviously the problem was to do with the "32767" holiday lines of the
file.

Hope that this helps.

Walter

Ride the trend my friend and make money both ways.

It's not wise to "be" something when that something isn't profitable.

nobbing around the world in a few years when I'm ready to leave.

Seriously, it's an incredible book and he publishes a great newletter bi
monthly (about $ 105 per year). Just for jollys you should read his
other book too. Information you can profit from...I know, my last trade
on a stock he mentioned in his book netted me 2600% in one month.

I'm trying to just make the trades and not do the stupid things I usually
do, like doubling the size of our investments as we make more and money. I
really need to work on money management. The system will take care of
itself.

Guy,

The trick is not to be a bear or a bull but to ride the horse in the
direction it's going.

Ride the trend my friend and make money both ways.

It's not wise to "be" something when that something isn't profitable.

Proverbial is for philosophers, not traders...

I generated my own test data set....picked up one my kids mutual fund data
sets, offset the date by four years, set msu "NOT" to overwrite existing
dates, and loaded each data file. I got the following chart, "year" display:

           '95 '96 '97 '98 '99 '00 '01 '02 '03

I then broke up the data so that an individual daily feed happened from Dec
15, 1999 to Jan 15, 2000. Again no problems.

I will send you my test data set, if you wish.

BTW, please note that I am using MS 4.0 for DOS.

Hi Guy,

Yes, the hardest part of trading is money management. With enough
effort anyone can learn to read patterns and trends but it's the
disipline and the managing of those trades (take small losses, keep to
your plan, set those stops {both profit and loss} that's the real part
of trading.

I understand what you mean now. It has been reported and verified.
When it will be fixed is not known at this point.

The workaround is to display the inner window title bar as the price
change and last price is shown there also.

Selecting Chart Title Bar Price Change gives only the Price Change not
the
Last Price as well.
Also I want to display last date on the right, so please don't suggest
using
that.

Surely if both Last Price and Change works for Daily display, it should
work
or can be made to work for Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly also.

Cheers
Ian
