OFFICE TIP OF THE MONTH: ANIMATING YOUR POWERPOINT 97 SHOWS
<http://mspress.microsoft.com/>

This month's tip is from "Running Microsoft Office 97, Updated Edition" (1998), by Michael Halvorson and Michael Young.
For more information about this title as well as all the offerings from Microsoft Press, please consult the Web address
above.

Microsoft PowerPoint 97 enables you to add animation effects to your slides to make them appear more interesting and
more energized. By using animation you can have each word fly in from one side of the slide, each paragraph seem to
dissolve from the slide background, or any of a variety of other effects. Follow these steps to animate objects in your
slides:
1. Create your slide content first, using text and graphic objects as you normally would. (For example, create a title,
a bulleted list, and a piece of clip art on your slide.)
2. Select the first object on your slide that you would like to animate.
3. Click the Animation Effects button on the Formatting toolbar. (The Animation Effects toolbar appears.)
4. Click the button on the toolbar corresponding to the effect you want to create. For instance, click the Laser Text
button to display your text letter by letter with a "laser" sound or click the Flying button to cause an object to fly
from the left with a "whoosh" sound.
5. Continue selecting objects one at a time on your slide and adding animation effects to them.
6. When you're finished, repeat the process on the remaining slides in your presentation, and then click the Animation
Effects button again to close the Animation Effects toolbar.
7. Now click the Slide Show button or choose the View Show command from the Slide Show menu, and preview all your
animation effects!

PATCHES AVAILABLE FROM OFFICE UPDATE ADDRESS DATA SECURITY
<http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/>

Users of Forms 2.0 or Word 97 will find English language version patches now available for download that will help
protect the data in their programs. The Forms 2.0 Control Security Patch will prevent hackers from using the Forms 2.0
Control to retrieve data from a user's Clipboard, and the Word 97 Template Security Patch warns users when they are
about to open a template that contains macros. We strongly recommend that users of these programs learn more about
these security issues and download the respective patches for their English language version products--to do so, just go
to the Office Update home page listed above, and follow the links to the appropriate patch from there. Information
about international versions of these patches is also available from the Web site.

One further note: as mentioned in our special alert bulletin to you a few days ago, an important English language
version patch for Outlook 97 and Outlook 98 users will soon be available on the Office Update Web site. This Outlook
Archive patch fixes an archive fidelity issue that may cause you to lose data during an archive process. Please check
the Office Update home page periodically, as we expect this patch to be available for download very soon. Again,
information about international versions of the patch will be included on the Web site.

CAN YOU JOIN US FOR TWO OFFICE 2000 EVENTS TO BE HELD IN U.S.?
<http://www.microsoft.com/office/2000/Office/Documents/events.htm>

In case your plans include travel to the United States in the next couple of months, you might want to know that the
popular Office 2000 Team Web Tour is back. This free seminar demonstrates the powerful new Web-enabled features of
Office 2000. A primary focus will be the tight integration between Office 2000 and the Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Web
site creation and management tool, making it easy to create intranet sites for your workgroup or team. Find out more
about the Team Web Tour at the above Web address.

Another important event coming soon in the U.S. is the Microsoft Office 2000 Deployment Conference, to be held March
29-31 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The conference provides attendees with the opportunity to get an in-depth education on
technical issues and best practices for deploying and managing Office 2000. To register or learn more about the
conference, please visit:
