Chris:
I organize my files into 5 categories:
AGR - grains and meats
FIN - currencies, indices, bonds
F&F - lumber, oj, cocoa, coffee, sugar
MET - metals
NRG - energy products
I created all the contracts of interest for 1998 in these 5 directories.
I move the current contracts I'm interested in, about 20, into a directory
called FUTURES.
I update theses 6 directories daily.
All expired contracts are put into a directory on a product by product basis.
Expired directory names have an underscore as prefix in the name. I have 5 top
level directories for historicals:
_AGR
_FIN
_F&F
_MET
_NRG
Under each of these, I store individual contracts for each commodity.
For example, all expired soybean contracts are stored in \_AGR\_S
and all expired Natural Gas files are under \_NRG\_NG.
This means maintenance about once per month to move out expired contracts,
and put the new current contract in to the FUTURES directory.
Anyone else have some ideas?

How do you folks manage your files? Remove expired contracts or juggle them
around into other directories or groups and such. The names in the directory
are not logical to me.
Any help in how to manage these files and/or organize files is greatly
appreciated.
Thanks
Chris
