John,
I don't have cable TV so for me there would be an additional expense of the
cable TV service. But aside from that, the two key things that are of value
to me are:
1 - The 50 megs of web site space that comes with my ISP. Even if I switch
to something later I can always rent the space. Also since I have an awards
business it will be of more value in the future.
2 - DSL is US West's gigabit service. The ISP will charge an additional $2 /
month for the service. Then there is the $40 / month that goes to US West
for the DSL.
So if I invest now I can reduce my future monthly DSL connection to about
$42 / month instead of paying $62 / month. And in fact if I had to pay $62/
month for DSL I might not sign up for it. But $42 / month for something
faster and cheaper than ISDN seems reasonable.
Although I am not an accountant I am an efficiency and cost control freak
when it comes to my business. I have found that if I invest in my business
with cheap inventory that my not move very fast it sure is nice when it does
go out the door at a nice profit.
