My own experience is first to back up your data, then clean up your hard
drives of everything you dont need and dont use. Try to find remnants
(artifacts) of old programs tha you have removed in the past. For starters
use the add/remove software button in the SETTINGS panel. If you have an
uninstaller program, use it to help find others. If you arent too kluzy
around a computer, try looking at your system files (use sysedit). Lastly
shut down any and all programs that are running in the background. While all
these suggestions usually work a little, none of them by themselves are
100%.
After you have done this check that your system is still running correctly.
Reboot and see if your most used/important programs are still running. Take
any necessary remedial action.
If you have to take any remedial action reboot and check again. If
everything is all right, inactivate/shut down all programs that are running
in the background and install Win98.
After you have installed Win98, you may find artifacts showing up (I have
Winfax artifacts showing up which I can ignore), for some reason some
programs may have to be reinstalled.
While this is tedious. Its easier than backing up everything and
reformatting your hard drive.
I thought that you could install Win98 over Win3.xx.
Hope this helps
