Re: A Stupid Question . . .

I experienced similar problems (with identical error messages). What worked
for me is that the SYMBOL LENGTH in the ASCII files was too long (> 14
positions if I remember well). The program I use to collect and export the
data (StockBrowser: FREEWARE and TERRIFIC) before conversion with the
Downloader has an option with which you can specify the maximum length of
the symbols. This then worked fine! Hope this works for you.

Subject: A Stupid Question . . .

I know for the majority, this is a stupid question, but I just can't
figure it out as to what I am doing wrong. I have just started to use a
program which gets my stock quotes from the Internet. It exports a file
in a format that MetaStock would be able to import.
And now the fun begins, I am running MetaStock 6.0 with the downloader
6.0. I have tried to update my files, but I have to be doing something
wrong. I just don't know what I am missing.

I am using the Convert portion of Downloader, For the Source, I have the
name of the ASCII file, for the destination, I have listed MetaStock as
the file type, and for the folder I have "C:\EQUIS\DATA\STOCKS ( my
folders I created are under the Stocks sub-directory, called Dj-30, and
Magic-25 ). Under options, for the destination, I have checked
TRANSVERSE and APPEND DATA to end of file.
The result is all data in the ASCII file does not convert. It shows as
total errors, under details, the message is " Unable to create
destination file. "
If I check off the option create new files, then under the sub-directory
of STOCKS, I will see folders created from A to X with the data files in
each one.
After several hours of frustration I could use any help from the group,
once again I apologize for the stupid question, but I am out of ideas.
Thanks In Advance
Ron
