The stock markets were set up when the US was still using British currency.
For several decades after the american revolution, British currency ws
favored over American currency in all transactions.  My guess is that the
fractional prices werre based on the practise of the London Stock exchange.

I thought that sites like bigcharts.com gave you an option, try
wallstreetcity.com and pcquote.com.
