Thank you for posting the answer to your own question.  I wish more would follow your example.

I have used the import wizard many times, but had not noticed that I could import more than one file at time.  That makes a world of difference.

The "import wizard" in the file menu, I can pick thousands of ascii files at once.
It imports thousands of ascii files in few minutes.
