Mike,
I followed the exact protocol for updating (It was an automatic
update). Further I went back and did it again with a different manual
procedure including a Windows un-install of Parallels Tools. The
results were the same. I don't run any Windows apps other than AB. I
do not have an anti-virus app running all the time either. It is as
lean a Windows system as is possible.
Yes, I have multiple full and incremental backups and can restore,
plus I kept a second identical system without the update for safety.
You could say that I am doubly paranoid about losing my data from
hardware or software failures. I do not trust anything about Windows
though, so I back up everything from the OS X side.
Not everyone will have the same problems with upgrading because it
would have been tested for the common cases. This update was actually
supposed to fix problems that some had with the last update (I did not
have any of those problems). However, they seem to have introduced a
new glitch for some configurations.
