Thanks!  So as best I can figure, 32-bits can only address 4G of memory, but 
part of the 4G is used to hold the "page table", which points to pages of 
data in virtual memory and so results in more than 4G of "total memory"? 
But then I wonder, assuming the page table is part of the OS, wouldn't 
taking 1G away from the OS and giving it to the apps possibly result in a 
smaller page table and so perhaps *lower* the amount of virtual memory that 
can be tracked?  Oh well, just thinking out loud....
