I would happily pay $500 for AmiBroker
IF it had great on-line help manuals.
I have not been following this thread much, but WIKI is a way to have a
GREAT ONLINE HELP PLACE without paying extra $. IMHO, leave the price of AB
alone, and we users need to start making the WIKI Amibroker great.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Technical_analysis_software
I have posted this link to the WIKI page of Technical_analysis_software,
and it appears that people have been correcting each other, which is the
whole idea of WIKI.
Wiki could easily become the central place to develop a kind of HELP place
outside of Amibroker, THAT USES PLAIN SIMPLE ENGLISH. An added benefit is
that there would still be an active place for Amibroker interchanges if (GOD
FORBID) TJ becomes incapacitated.
So what if some of the information is incorrect. If it were to develop into
a very active place, the errors would be resolved by others who recognize
the error. Lets all learn to accept that this will NEVER be a perfect
world.
A perfect example of errors getting corrected (AND THE BENEFITS OF USING
PLAIN SIMPLE ENGLISH) is the post I made several days ago (SHOWN BELOW) and
this response (SHOWN DIRECTLY BELOW) that Tom posted. My code had errors
in it, (REF(c>ref(c,2),5); should have been (REF(c>ref(c,-2),-5); but my
use of PLAIN SIMPLE ENGLISH still helped Tom Finally understand it. Graham
provided massive amounts of help to me when I was learning. Ron D

Ron,
The examples that you used were perfect. Even I could understand how they
worked and learn how to do things that I wanted to do but didn't know how to
do it. I spent a lot of time using barssince and ref trying accomplish this.
Thanks,
Tom

In the very early days of my Amibroker learning curve, The best
help that I
received was from this board when an experienced user was kind
enough to
quickly code an example or what I was asking.
Then, I would play with what they had given me, and I started to
understand
how to use Amibroker.
For example, REF(c>ref(c,2),5); says that the close that happened
five days
ago has to be higher than the close that happened on the sixth day
ago.
Whereas, SUM(c>ref(c,2),5); only requires that any one or more of the
closes over the last five days has to be higher than the previous
days
close.
The above examples of simple english explanations from this board
are how I
started learning Amibroker. Ron D

This is one post I strongly agree with. Perhaps Howard should be brought
into the discussion on how to help finance a new book. Perhaps a guaranteed
number of sales or whatever.
PS - The many many good ideas raise hope that this time a solution will
indeed be found.

Brian is right that the Help manual is incomplete and inadequate.
I don't buy the argument that "we shouldn't expect it to be complete
because AmiBroker is cheap".
I know it's just TJ and Marcin, but that's TJ's choice. I've stated
before, and I'll state again, I would happily pay $500 for AmiBroker
IF it had great on-line help manuals. IF it had something along the
lines of a decent beginners, intermediate and advanced users guide.
And I'm sure new incremental users would come on board as AmiBroker
becomes more 'accessbile' to the masses.
I took the plunge with AmiBroker, and there is absolutely no doubting
it's a fine product.
The users of AmiBroker deserve to get the same support as they would
if they chose to purchase one of the C# based alternatives - namely
Ninja, RightEdge or OpenQuant etc. IF they have to pay more for that
support, then so be it... TJ can hire someone to work solely on new
user guides for the next 6 months. Shouldn't cost too much.
Let's pretend that Howard produces a 'beginners' book for AmiBroker,
then another one for more advanced users, say focusing on the custom
backtester... suddenly we've got three books for AmiBroker coming in
at $50 each... that's $150.
Personally I'd be happy with either solution. A Howard provided
alternative that costs $150, or an in-house AmiBRoker one that adds
$150 to AB price.
But let's at least have one of the two alternatives.
