Brian,
As you know well, I am all for openess, and in a perfect world I would
say "edit whatever you wish (also other people material) anytime and anywhere".
But unfortunatelly we are not living in a perfect world and allowing editing by anyone
would destroy the quality of UKB.
Wikipedia, as you know has FULL-TIME editors/admins
who don't do anything but watch for the changes and revert cases of vandalism,
the have dozens of programs that watch pages etc

You would be surprised how much work I have with moderation of comments
(literally hundreds of spammers every day attempting to UKB spam via comments)
If editing was open to everyone without any control the UKB would be flooded
with spam/porn links/advertising within seconds.
So current scheme of one-time simple registration and editing posts by author only is actually good balance
between maximum openess and maintenance costs.
