4004 was too early for me :-)  I was 1 year old when it was released :-)
Not to mention that it was impossible to get such IC in Poland.
 
Even back in 1983 I needed to buy many ICs (6116 static memory, Z80 (actually Nec clone of it))
on the black market as they were completely non-existing in normal shop.
In that in that period we had martial law and shops were lacking even most basic things.
 
That's actually suprising to myself that all that obstacles actually increased motivation and energy.
Nowadays with everything easily available the motivation is mostly missing.
