Paul,

Hi.   I use Windows Server 2003 every day (I’m a contract database developer).   I like it much better than Win XP.

My only issue is the cost.   I’m having difficulty getting past that.

Regards,

Dan.

Hi Dan

Since you'll be running Scan for considerable time each night and each instance of AB could only utilise 1/2 of the core. ie 50% of the cpu power. That means 50% is available for other use.

I have recently purchased an E6600 myself. and have the thought of using the surplus 50% for something else, either for use by other members of the family, or run aother instance of IO. The most convenient way for me is to have available multiple concurrent users. For example, My kids can be using the PC for music, email and stuff and I logged in with remote terminal access and run IO. All current windows only allows single user, so it doesn't allow effective use of the surplus 50% very easily. but I believe winodows server 2003 will allow multi users which is what I need. Micosoft is offering a 150 days trial of Window 2003 R2 so I'll take that up and give that a try. You may want to consider something similar to that.

cheers

Many thanks to everyone, including a great fellow who sent me a PM.   This is a joint effort, and the configuration reflects your great suggestions and advice.

Here’s the latest configuration.   I’d like to finalize and order by Thursday.  Please take a look, especially the questions.

Thanks,

Dan.

OS – Windows XP

Processor – (1) Intel Core 2 Duo - E6700 2.66GHz 2MB (LGA775): http://shop.hdnw.com/product.aspx?n=CP-INT923C.  Very fast and a bit pricey.

Memory – (4) 1Gb Corsair memory sticks.  Either the “Dominator 2GB 1066 (PC2 8500)” (PN: TWIN2X2048-8500C5D) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145043 or the “DOMINATOR 2GB 800 (PC2 6400)” (PN: TWIN2X2048-6400C4D).   I’m not sure which is appropriate, but both have $40 off rebate (ends Saturday 6/30).   Suggestions on this?

Motherboard – (1) Asus P5W64: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131047.  Andy sold me on this guy.  Very fast, flexible, full featured, and FOUR PCI-E slots.  Great expandability.   This is the one!  ;-)

System and Application Disks – (2) Western Digital 150GB SATA 10K RPM Raptor model: http://shop.hdnw.com/product.aspx?n=HD-150W01.  Very fast.

Video Graphics Cards – (2) XFX GeForce 7300 GT / 512MB GDDR2 / PCI Express / Ultra-Silent Cooling / Dual DVI / HDTV:  http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2902958&Sku=P450-7896.  $99.99 less $30 (Rebate ends 6/30).   Will four of these guys fit into an Asus P5W64 MOBO?

Case – LIAN LI PC-V1200Aplus II Silver Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112065.   This has great cooling and lots of space for disk drives.   And wheels!
