RE: [amibroker] OT: Acronis True Image and Spotmau

You can probably reboot in Safe mode by pressing F8 as you boot – which bypasses the normal boot sequence.  Once you get it up the first time, it should boot normally.  Simplest and most effective Backup software I’ve seen is SyncBack – basic freeware works well – or you can pay $30 for the pro version – either way you can be back up in minutes, but this doesn’t sound like this kind of trouble – just a hung boot sequence you need to get restarted.  Your Sony should have a recovery disk that is bootable that came with it.  Once you boot from that, you should be able to see your hard drive – or once you have it up in safe mode – do your back up routine according to the backup software instructions.

But this doesn’t sound like a drive failure………..although it could be – hard to tell without more detailed information about exactly what the machine is or is not doing as you attempt to boot again with it powered up.  Some machines will not run without a battery of some kind – even a low life one to act as part of the voltage regulator circuit.  So if you have a battery that doesn’t last long, make sure it’s in the machine anyway…………unless it’s causing problems………. New batteries are easy to come by via internet sources.

Hope some of this helps……..

Lots of causes of boot failure – if you have lost the boot sector of your primary drive, you need a bootable disk of some kind – but as I said, that may not be the problem here.

I have a Sony Vaio notebook without a battery that I use by plugging it into a 110v AC wall plug.

The last time that I turned it on, I failed to notice that it was not plugged in, and it died before it was fully booted up.

TJ's old post below says that  Acronis True Image can be used to restore when you can not boot.

I am going to purchase a copy of Acronis anyway, but I am guessing that my Sony it will not boot from a brand new copy of Acronis that I has never been in the Sony before.  If this is the case, then should I purchase a copy of Spotmau as well so that I can boot up the Sony?

Is this Spotmau link above a good product?    When I searched Spotmau, I saw several comments which led me to think that Spotmau can be used by lowtech types.

Ara,

The key feature is ability to restore backup even if you CAN NOT BOOT to Windows.

I am afraid that with MS products you need to boot to windows to run them :-( And this is show stopper.

Acronis True Image, allows to restore when you can not boot, because it

creates self-bootable CD-ROM that runs even if master boot record on your hard disk is destroyed.
