Lightning hits

Being here in Tampa the lightning capital of the world

The Electric company offers what they call a "Zap Cap" this unit goes on
the outside electric meter

This unit will short circuit when a power surge comes in from the outside (
any lightning strike ) there is a nominal monthly fee for it and there is
insurance that goes along with it. Since I draw 400amps from the pole I
have commercial unit on the home and the insurance coverage is 10k per
occurrence. Since they put the insurance part on it I have to believe it
works. So far nothing has fried.

A friend's house got hit by lightening. All his computers got fried
including the connected external hard drive!

After I heard that story, I bought a few UPS power boxes for all my
computers.

DVD or CD is the best way to go.
ie Burn a set of your large static data (Make two backups to be sure)
Then make (At least) monthly backups of more volatile data.
That way, You also have an ability to go back in time to older backups
and restore some file "You deleted and never thought you'd need again"

I personaly had a 5 disk (120gb each) raid array fail and loose alot of
data.
x4 active in the array, x1 active spare
x1 failed, And the system started rebuilding on the hot spare.
Then another failed while still rebuilding.
So melt down of the raid server ensued.
But I thought, Ya... OK. I'll restore from DAT tape.....
Started restoring and the DAT drive decided to eat the tape. (Tape
spewed all around the internals of the drive).
I'm lucky I had previously dumped half of the data to a 2nd
workstation, It was considerably older but still
salvageable, But I did loose my collection of movies and old TV shows
that DIDN'T fit on the 2nd workstation. <Sigh>

TODAYS LESSON,
NEVER TRUST YOUR HARDWARE
