Dan,

You can go to http://finance.yahoo.com/ and launch the stock
screener (scroll down and look for it on the left). The screener is
a Java application so you'll have to have that loaded. You, no
doubt, have a Yahoo ID since you're on this forum, but, as
information, I was able to reach the screener without my ID.

You can specify NASDAQ, NYSE, or AMEX if you want to get symbols for
a specific exchange (or none if you want them all). Note that the
screener will display a subset of the results (I believe it's
limited to 200), but you can export all of the search results to an
Excel spreadsheet.

The nice thing about the screener is that you can tailor the lists
using the various criteria that are available. It's a quick and
easy way to generate specific watchlists, etc. Note also, that
there are bond and mutual fund screeners. Haven't looked at those,
myself.

Microsoft, by the way, has a very nice free screener, as well. If
memory serves, however, you can only export the current screen,
which is a subset of the entire search. I could be wrong on that as
I haven't checked it in some time. If interested, go to
http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/finder/customstocksdl.asp and
look for "Deluxe Stock Screener" on the bottom right.

In either case you should be able to get a reasonably current list
of ticker symbols. If you're using Yahoo to provide updates, this
approach has the advantage of insuring that Yahoo has whatever
symbols you end up with using the search. A side benefit is that
you can end up with a spreadsheet full of fundamental and technical
data that you can utilize for studies.
