I never tried it.
However, PCMAG has a utility called COA2. You can download it,
including source code, from:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,960882,00.asp
Though I have been meaning to for years, I have never tried COA2
either. Also, Win2K is the last OS it seems to work with.
While on the subject, we all know backing up is critical, though most
of us seem to procrastinate rather than do it on a regular basis. I
have found the easiest, and therefore the most reliable way for me, is
to back up to an external USB2.0 250G hard drive, less than $150 US. I
zip large directories like my email and MyDocuments to the drive.
Also, I image entire 20G partitions in about 20 minutes using "Image
for Windows" from TeraByte Unlimited, under $30 US.
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/imagew.html
BTW, Image for Windows is a bit geeky. If you are not, maybe you might
want to try Acronis True Image $50 US. I've never used it but it gets
good reviews. There are many more including Symantec Ghost, $70 US. I
had problems with Norton Anti-Virus and Norton
Internet Security years ago, so Symantec is off my personal buy list.
Good Luck,

Hello Graham,
I have done that.
All links go dead and one has to re-do everything. Other than that I
saw no problem.

Re: [amibroker] Re: Backing up for reformat
Has anyone tried changing AB installation to another hard drive on same
computer?
Does copying the files retain the original drive letter component, or
will they just take on the new drive wihtout problem?

Yes, I write AFL code to your requirements

Yes, just copy back the entire AB directory over the newly installed
files!
Now, I must fess up. I haven't formated a drive in years. I haven't
had the need. However, I usually try all of TJ's betas and sometimes I
go back to an older version. I've also transfered AB from my desktop
to laptop and back again using the same technique. Never had a problem.
Fess up #2. I've never changed operating systems since I've had AB.
I'm running Win2K Pro (and don't plan on changing). Maybe, just maybe,
it wouldn't work if you are following M$'s upgrade path (XP, Vista,
THEMOON) or going from 32 bit to 64 bit operating system. But if you
do zip everything, you KNOW you did the best you could.

Keith,
I'm not sure that I follow you. Do you reinstall AmiB once the drive
is reformatted and then just copy back the entire AmiB directory over
the newly installed Program files?
Do you do the same thing for routine backups? If you have a problem
would you simply copy the backup of the entire AmiB directory over the
installed Program files?
By the way, I'm attempting to translate the information in the link
that Tomasz provided into a specific set of files to backup. I'm just
using Yahoo to update my U.S. Stocks database, so my situation is
fairly straightforward. Following is my list, so far:
Data Files to Backup
AmiBroker Folder
broker.layers
broker.sectors
broker.industries
broker.prefs
broker.params
U.S. Stocks Folder
Entire folder, including broker.master, broker.workspace and
broker.watch
Layouts Folder
Entire folder, including Local layouts.awl (only file listed)
Could Not Locate
broker.charts
broker.bcharts
broker.groups - could not locate - stored in broker.workspace (?)
broker.markets - could not locate - stored in broker.workspace (?)
Note that I'm working on the assumption that there is no need to
backup the AmiB Data folder since it can be reinstalled from scratch
if needed. The U.S. Stocks database, however, would have to be backed
up routinely.
If anyone has any clarifications I would appreciate it.
