RE: [amibroker] editing issues

You can use Insert Linked to get your original AFL to drive the chart.
Then changes are reflected as you edit the original (but copies are not
changed). Basically yourFile.afl and yourFile 1.afl or yourFile 2.afl
are completely separate files.

I use Insert Linked, but this too has drawbacks. Sometimes you make many
changes and wish you could go back, but there are just too many to use
undo. So, it's best to use SaveAs if you start changing more than a few
minor items. Still, this has gotten me in trouble at times. The best
solution is to have the editor make sequential backups every time you
make an edit (this is NOT a suggestion to TJ). UltraEdit makes a single
.bak file. AB used to make AFLSAFE files, but I no longer see them.
Still in either case, it's just the changes before your last Apply or
Backtest and not the changes you made a half hour ago.

So, I insert linked, edit the original file and try to SaveAs whenever
I'm getting into significant changes. I then must delete the "old" chart
and apply the new one. For the most part, this works fine. I also use
UltraEdit for special functions (such as auto-formatting, comparing two
versions, mass changes, find in files, etc.)

Subject: [amibroker] editing issues

Hi,

I have a concern about editing AFL files on the fly.

I've got customised indicators like most users in the /Custom folder.
I drag and drop these and as time goes on, I want to edit the original
formula to update on the charts. I'm yet to find a practice that works
and wondered what others do.

By drag/drop, the chart edited formula resides in some drag-drop
directory. Editing this doesn't reflect the change in the original
formula.

Some times, I end up with another similar named filename in the Custom
folder which has had a numeric value appended to the filename - still no

change to original.

Changing the original doesn't reflect a change to the formula running
within the charts.

I'm more concerned that my apparent lack of housekeeping knowledge is
going to end up losing code changes. Not a big deal in my coding infancy

but maybe not later in life.

Appreciate any comments
Martin
