Amibroker will do all that you ask, quickly and without too much storage
or CPU requirements. My installation is ~120MB, which will be more if
you keep a large stock database, I don't). Yahoo historical daily data
is available for free. Back-testing features are amazing. Install isn't
that difficult and instructions are provided online.

On the downside, it can be confusing to get going simply because it is
like no other programs you use (not a word processor, spreadsheet or
graphics program), especially for those that don't consider themselves a
computer whiz ;-) You also mention intraday data. There are free
sources, but you will need to work to maintain that data (being online
all day everyday or nearly so to collect and save RT data) or pay for a
service like eSignal that provides long backfills ($50/month minimum).
However, I'm not the best source here since I don't use minute data.

That said, if you want to invest you need to commit the time to learning
some stock analysis program with good back-testing features and
Amibroker is the best choice, IMHO.

I believe the demo version will let you see if you like it or not, but
be prepared to invest some serious time getting past the learning curve.
This board is a great place to get help, provided you help yourself
first by looking in the manual, the help files and online at

Subject: [amibroker] Amibroker features

Hi,

I'm looking to test Amibroker specifically for the backtesting
features. I'm no computer whiz and looked at the installation
procedures and it looked complicated, having to install many different
modules.

What would be the simplest, and least memory/cpu intensive
installation needed for using amibroker mainly for backtesting?

Also, would i need to have my own datasource or would amibroker
provide it? i use IB currently.

What type of format will the intraday data be, i often look at
1,3,5,15 min e-minis (es & nq).

Would the trial version allow me to see if amibroker stores the data
and backtests ok for me (i understand the language is easier to use,
so i'm hoping to see if i can hack it). someone told me the trial
version is unable to store info is this true?

thanks.
