Duke,
I don’t use IBD sector and industry classification,
I use the TC classifications and price data. The TC Sector-to-Industry and
Industry-to-Stock symbol mapping is done by TC. TC Sector and Industry symbols
are set up and maintained in the TC database. This is available in AB automatically
because AB uses the native TC database. This allows great flexibility in AB.
For example…
I can chart a stock and overlay its
industry price chart in the same pane. Or, I can plot the Stock RSI(9) AND
Industry RSI(9) in the same pane. Or, I can generate the Relative Strength of
a Stock to its Industry, or the Industry’s RS to the SP-500. Or I can
plot a 10 and 40 period MA of a Stock’s Industry Relative Strength to the
SP-500 in that same pane. Or, I can calculate the stock’s Industry rank
within all other 200-odd industries based on the Industry RSI(9). Or, I can
plot all Sectors’ Relative Strength to the SP-500. To be precise, I CURRENTLY
do all of the above in AmiBroker using TC data.
From my prior posts, you can see I’m
not a fan of TC, but the data works well for me.
Regarding the HGS classification, I’m
missing something….
It looks like the HGS Industry
classification is generated by the HGS software. But if I use QP, it looks
like I’m bypassing the HGS added value. How does the HGS classification
get into AB? Does HGS create sector and industry symbols and price data that
can be plotted in AB? How does it get merged with the QP data so that it is
seamlessly and automatically loaded into AB. What do I get for $59/per month?
Frankly, if another vendor provided Industry
and Sector data like TC does for about $30/month, I’d switch quickly.
Regards,
Dan.

Dan,
For what I would consider the best option for
Sector and Industry analysis, you might want to check out
www.highgrowthstock.com. This software has their own sector and industry
classification which I think is better than IBD or you can create your own structure
on an equal, price or cap weighted basis. Best of all you can import the data
into AB and test it as can create historical data streams of your custom
groups. Both AB & HGS use QP data so it is almost seemless.

Duke Jones, CMT

groupings andsymbols for each Sector and Industry. I believe this to be
one of theirstrongest benefits.

andSectors, I set up each Industry with the TC symbol for that industry
(Symbols à Categories à Industries). Since each Stock symbol is
mapped to an industry, the Industry symbol canbe used for relative strength
analysis in Charts and Scans. The AFL forRelative Strength to Industry
is:

RelStrength(GetBaseIndex());

TCSectors in 6 panes on two charts as a set of lines. It makes it easier
toanalyze them.

Wordenpublish only the data, expose more of their attributes in their API
(currentlyonly Money Stream and BOP), and provide full access to intraday data
in theirAPI.
>
> Unfortunately, Worden tends to be a bit
"idiosyncratic". Instead of focusing on their strengths,
they spent massive amounts of time andenergy with a stand-alone tool call
Worden Studio which doesn't integratewith TC and is very poor compared to
competitive products (like StockCharts). When I took them to task on the issue,
they condescendingly pointed out that Ijust didn't know how to use the
tool. (Not once, but severaltimes.) So, I wrote them
off as non-communicative and not a seriousvendor of charting tools.
>
> In some respects, a similar company
isIBD. AFAIK, IBD is the only other company that has strong
Sectorand Industry groupings with some charting and scanning at the Industry
and Stocklevel. And, their analysis is pretty good.
That'sthe good news…
>
> The bad news is that IBD is a serious
hassleto deal with. They are very expensive, their charting tools and
scanning arevery poor and they do not expose their data through an
API. Theonly way to export some of the data is using a manual
export process. They're still working in the dark ages of stock analysis
- lots ofmarketing with modest content, packaged in a proprietary interface.
>
> Hopefully, Worden and IBD will get
theiract together and start meeting customers' needs instead of using a
"marketingby navel gazing" strategy. Like many
companies, theyhave some good product features to offer, but leave lots money
on the tablebecause of their inability to package and market them effectively.
