    From an end users point, Yes it does operate in a similar way to 
windows.

    Your second question can be answered in two parts.
       Linux is an Operating System, just as Windows is an operating 
system (hehe)
       As Dale mentioned, You can install Linux on a free (Spare) 
partition or Second
         harddrive - Using a dual boot setup to load either Windows OR 
Linux when you
         turn your computer on.     Personaly, I don't like dual boot 
setups.

    Windows programs are designed to run on windows, Not on linux.
       However CrossOffice or Wine do a very good job of providing an 
Windows like
       environment that your windows apps can run in. Apps run on 
desktop like any other app.

    You should use native linux apps 1st, And windows apps as a last resort.
       Yes most apps are available for linux in some fashon or form.
       eg MainActor, NeroCDrom, Office Apps, AcrobatReader etc etc are 
all available
            as native linux apps. And various media players are 
available for linux too.
