Thanks, Bob and John, for replying and suggesting how to resolve my problem. Apparently, installing NetZero trashed my modem driver, so I have to restore it from the Recovery CD that came with the laptop, which is at work. Now I know why NetZero is free. You get what you pay for!! Trash. I uninstalled the software. I will use iPass from now on.

Regards,

Al Venosa

Assuming the modem is plug 'n Pray, I'd try to uninstall it using
Control Panel's 'add remove hardware wizard'.

Subject: [amibroker] OT: Lost Comm Port

  Hi, all:

Off-topic question for you PC gurus. Last week, I needed to sign up for
an ISP for my laptop that would work in Canada (mine only provides local
phone numbers in the U.S.). So, I downloaded NetZero. After downloading
the program, I could no longer communicate via my dialup connection. I
kept getting error message 633, which said another program is using your
modem, which was not true. When I went to the device manager, I noticed
there was no comm port listed, just my LPT1 port. So, somehow,
downloading NetZero trashed my comm port. I even tried iPass, but
without a comm port, it, too, wouldn't work. My modem uses Com3. Does
anyone know how to restore one's comm port? I would be much obliged to
  anyone who can help. Thanks.

  Al Venosa
