Hi D,

Thanks for the reply. I am definitely no expert,
but I think that Remote Desktop actually does the opposite
of what I want to do - rather than see both computers on one screen, I
would like to stretch the desktop of one computer across both screens.
Right now, they are networked together but neither is equipped for multiple
monitors, and I was wondering what my options are for extending the desktop
via the network connection. I think the software you pointed out below looks
like a pretty good solution - cheap and easy  : - )  Would you
happen to know if there are other ways? Thanks again!

PS - Re the chair - I think I would fear for
society knowing that you are out there somewhere at the controls of a
piece of equipment like that    : - )   How would this
affect civilization as we know it?

Your concerned friend Steve   : -

  <FONT face=Arial
  color=#0000ff size=2>Currently (and not what I eventually want) I have 3
  monitors hooked up to my main system, Hulk, and that is networked to an
  older Dell P3 1ghz machine and a Dell D400 Latitiude laptop which I can also
  hook up via a wireless connection. That's all handled by a Nexland Turbo 800
  Pro router that handles a crappy Adelphia cable modem and a DSL connection
  that I had to get cause the cable service is so bad.
  <FONT face=Arial
  color=#0000ff size=2>
  <FONT face=Arial
  color=#0000ff size=2>One of the 3 montiors (an old Nokia 21" Tube) shares duty
  right now on both Hulk and the Dell via a KVM switch from IOGear.  All I
  have to do is hit the ScrLk twice and it will switch from one machine to
  the other. I tend to run only long or unattended jobs on the old Dell so I
  don't need much in the way of a monitor on that machine.

  <FONT face=Arial
  color=#0000ff size=2>I tried to install Win XP's remote desktop (I think
  that's what its called) but it didn't "take" so I backed off and I haven't
  persued it  but that would be the better way to go IMHO as you could have
  a small window on your monitor that would show what's happening on the other
  machine(s).  Its free and built in so those are big plusses. If only I
  could get it to work.  8-).
  <FONT face=Arial
  color=#0000ff size=2>
  <FONT face=Arial
  color=#0000ff size=2>As for the laptop - I don't have it on all the time and
  don't really need a fourth monitor right now as the 3 - 21" running at
  1600x1200 give me plenty of screen real estate. Plus the resolution on the
  laptop is pretty limited so its value as a monitor would be
  small.
  <FONT face=Arial
  color=#0000ff size=2>
  <FONT face=Arial
  color=#0000ff size=2>As for your situation if you want to use both monitors on
  both machines you could try the remote desktop and see if you can get it to
  work or they make KVM's for sharing one keyboard/video/mouse with multiple
  machines but I don't know about 1 keyboard/1 mouse/ 2 monitors with multiple
  computers.

    Hi D,

    I saved this post from a while back. Right now,
    I have 2 computers networked together, and I think I am ready to
    implement some means of expanding my desktop so I will be able to use
    both monitors off of 1 computer. It sounds like you have a pretty good
    setup, so I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on doing this via
    hardware vs. software, as well as any recommendations you might have to
    offer. Thank you very much!

    Steve

    PS - All responses from others are also
    welcome !
