Actually, DT, the puzzle is a mirage, a scam. The hypotenuses are slightly
and subtly curved. They just look like straight lines but are not really. If
you stare at the figures long enough, you may notice the upper hypotenuse of
both triangles is ever so slightly curved, concave in the upper diagram and
convex in the lower, with just enough difference to make the one extra box
in the lower one. If you look at the two triangles you will see that the
dark green one is two up and five across, or 2.5:1, and the red one is 3 up
and 8 across or 2.667:1. The major triangle is 13 x 5, or 2.6:1. The only
way you can do that is by curving the hypotenuse lines, regardless of how
subtly. So, you were right about the "feel good" appearance of the
triangles, but mathematically the "slight difference" is impossible.
