If you 
have one of the more professional (for lack of a name) operating systems such as 
NT or XP, you can "diddle" with the priorities of any program in task 
manager.  I frequently lower the priority of AmiBroker, for instance, if 
I'm going to use that CPU for an email and I'm inpatient.
