Ref is a function, not an operator.
Functions need symbols, operators need simple signs.
If we replace the Ref(X,per) with (X,per) we should need an
additional info for the meaning of the left parenthesis, combined
with "," and "per" and right ")". It would be
*useless
*complicated
*confusing with other (X,smth) uses.
These are some reasons we need names for functions.
It would not be "simple" as you may think.
In the history of mathematics, we have some rare examples to erase
the name of a procedure.
Here is the most interesting:
Einstein had a lot of troubles with summations, he was writing pages
with simple, double or triple summations and he was fed up with the
math symbol SIGMA. So, one sunny morning he decided to stop writing
SIGMA, he invented the well known "Einsteinīs Summation Convention"
and the scientific community accepted the formalism and Albert was
happy, he was free from SIGMAs now !!
BTW, Ref() is of the most important AFL functions and, imo, the
symbol is just fine.
