I have to agree. I happened to read a brief article that really
struck me the other day. The "do unto others.." phrase in Tomasz'
post called it to mind. Here are some other amazing instances of that
phrase of which I had not known before reading the article:
Buddhism: Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find
hurtful (Udanavarga 5:18)
Islam: No one of you is a believer until he desires for his brother
that which he desires for himself (Sunan)
Judaism: What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow man. That is
the entire Law; all the rest is commentary (talmud, Shabbat 31a)
Confusianism: Is there one maxim which ought to be acted upon
throughout one's whole life? Surely it is the maxim of loving-
kindness. Do not unto others what you would not have them do unto
you. (Analects: 15:23)
and the list of sources goes on. I was utterly amazed to find not
just the same thought echoed in so many diverse religious and
spiritual teachings, but also that it is often presented as the
numero uno teaching.
Now, case in point, you can easily and freely disagree that sharing
these quotes is essentially off-topic, or inappropriate -- or
whatever -- and if you do, I would only ask that you disagree
respectfully <g>! For my part, I also find that many of the recent
back-and-forth dialogues have been hard to read through. I find
myself losing respect for individuals whom I otherwise admire for
their market skill or programming expertise. One suggestion I would
make is that, if you find yourself tempted to write an acrimonious
post, remember that the "To:" on any post is the group, not just a
single other person. We often direct follow-up questions to
individuals, etc., yes, but the audience is still the larger group.
If you want to argue with someone, great. Ask that person for his/her
personal email address, and go at it -- outside the group! I can
virtually guarantee any author of a post that you'll look your
absolute best in this group if you take the "high road" and that you
will score absolutely zero points with anyone if you fall to the
temptation to rebutt a negative post wiht another negative post.
I would only add that, while I hate to say it, I would encourage
Tomasz to remove from the board access for any individual who
persists in creating posts that either he alone or the majority of
members find offensive -- no matter the skill or knowledge of that
person otherwise.
