Ken,
I would just create a new layer just for text and draw text on that layer.
Whenever you want to see the text you just turn on the layer and it appears.
You can even create mutlple layers for different kind of texts that
you want to show/hide independently.
Keep in mind that layers are global, so there is no problem with managing them.
