Well
at least there is a way around it.  There may be other products on the
market or even little utilities that do the same as ZoneLabs.  At least for
the e-mail section.  If Zonelabs can do it and there are other people like
yourself who don't want Zonelab but do want to be able to open restricted
attachments then there is probably a solution.

  <SPAN
  >Thanks for the advice, Paul.
Outlook v.10 with S:P1 installed and not attached to an exchange server is
exactly my situation.  I like the idea of quarantining the attachment and
giving the user the option of taking action to liberate it.  Took a look
  at ZoneLab&#8217;s web site.  Since I already have a D-Link router/firewall,
the notion of spending $49.95 for another firewall plus an additional $20 for
a second year of updates and support, just to deal with a MS quirk, seems like
using a hammer to swat a fly.  I&#8217;ll think about it some more.
  Thanks again.

Just to add there are ways around this.   I currently have ZoneAlarm
installed as a personal firewall.  One of the things this program does is
checks attachments to e-mails to prevent Trojans.  Somehow this program
gets hold of the attachments before the outlook security does.  It will
change the file extension to something that is associated with zonealarm and
is not considered dangerous by outlook.  This allows the program to be
accessible within outlook.  If you open from within outlook it starts up
some zonealarm window that informs you of the unsafe nature of the
attachment.  If you try to run it from there windows will not allow
you.  But you can "Save As..." with its proper file extension and then
you use explorer to open/run the file.

    <FONT face=Arial color=blue
    size=2>If you
are using Outlook v10 with SP1 installed and you are not attached to an
Exchange Server then you have no control over this feature.  Since the
introduction of SP1 Microsoft has decided that users are too stupid to
understand that attachments are dangerous and has automatically
restricted access to these files.  <A
    href="">http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;262631
If however you are attached to an Exchange server then you can get the
Administer of the that server to allow these files.  But it's very
unlikely that they will do this unless you own the server.  So
basically if you install Outlook v10 do not install any of the service
packs, or you will not be able to access certain files.  The list
of files is in the web link.

Tomasz, but this is Microsoft Outlook 2002 v.10, not Outlook Express (the
similar names do cause confusion).  Can&#8217;t find any similar option to
over-ride the blocking of (some) attachments.  I may have to make a
