Glen,
no matter of your previous MS experience, optimization is an advanced
procedure.
You should become familiar with basic AFL concepts, like cross
function [many trading ideas are based on a cross].
Before setting up a cross, you should know how to write the arrays
you expect a cross.
A simple moving average crossover needs perfect understanding before
more complicated use.
When you write
Buy=cross(C,MA(C,10));
you should clearly understand what is going on, ie the day BEFORE the
cross C<MA(C,10) and the NEXT day C>MA(C,10).
Plot in indicator builder whatever you use in AA.
For the above example
Plot(C,"Close",1,64);Plot(MA(C,10),"10bars MovAverage",4,1);
Then write a simple
Buy=cross(C,MA(C,10));
Sell=cross(MA(C,10),C);
scan, backtest it,see the arrows in detail to understand how cross()
function operates.
This will be educative before optimization procedure.

X=OPTIMIZE("X",10,10,50,5);
Buy=cross(C,MA(C,X));
Sell=cross(MA(C,X),C);

The next step would be better access to the most important AFL
function Ref()
