To me, Real Time pretty much implies tick-by-tick.
You can get [but not really act on] all US symbols with a good sat feed. Most providers, however, severely throttle options to keep
the bandwidth within bounds.
The closest to real-time tracking that I know of was LiveWire Professional--Jeff Blokker claimed he could track 50,000 symbols with
a BMI feed. He tried to switch to internet with much of the crunching done on his servers, but eventually folded.
The current trend is to internet as evidenced by DTNIQ vs. big-dish DTN.

OK thanks. That's too bad. My Dutch real time data provider gives 700
NYSE stocks + 500 Nasdaq stocks for about 850$ per year. Ofcourse you
do not get all ticks it, but one can pretty good follow the real time
price change.
So in the US it is basicly not possible to follow a large number of
stocks in real-time.
