Could the same be done with running 2 instances of QT into separate
databases of AB. Or even a single database?

AFAIK you can not mix two different sources. BUT you can just create
another,
separate database for your second source (e.g. MS data)
File->New database
Then you can simply switch between databases by choosing from the File menu.
