Just to add to this thread,
I find running a RedHat Gateway to be the ideal solution,
It gives you:
*Software flexability - Forwarding only designated ports etc, easy
configuration, Plus secutiry patches and AddOn service options are easy to
apply.
*Hardware Reliablity - Infact the gateway seems to have an uptime longer
than alot of people running HWRouters for personal use. RedHat is very stable.
*Same benifits as a HWRouter of being able to connect multiple PC's to your
internet connection.
*Doesn't Burden your Workstation with FW software running in the background
sucking up System resources and CPU cycles etc, Adding to unstability.
*Added benifit of being able to run a WebServer etc on the sly ;-)
*Downside - Not many - 99% of Inet based apps work, The 1% that don't are
mostly games anyway.
In regards to AntiVirus,
I use Norton AV with NO problems (XP). Andin the past I have had
Mcafee completly miss viruses that norton picked up. As a result I don't
trust Mcafee. Also system is stable with Norton AV - Not so with Mcafee
last time I used it.
AV should be installed and running ALL the time. As Im sure many of you
have encounted Java viruses embeded into HTML pages etc etc.
I also take the added precaution of NOT using MS OUTLOOK. There are much
better mail programs out and about anyway.
