Al,

No, I don't agree. While hardware router/firewall is good
solution it does not solve all problems.
For example software firewalls have ability to selectively
disable traffic for certain
applications on your computer and detect new applications
added/modified and do not allow
traffic unless you allow it.
This kind of functionality (selective firewalling of
individual applications) is beyond capabilities
of hardware firewalls. This is the main reason why software
firewalls are very usefull.
The best combination would be however having
both.

I was told recently that software-based firewalls are useless. If a
hacker wants to hack into your computer, it's easy for him to do that despite
having a software-based firewall. Better is to have a hardware-based firewall
like a Linksys router that is used for networking your computers at home. Do
  you agree with this?

    Hello,

    Firewall:  Agnitum Outpost personal (<A
    href="">http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/)
note that free version is more than enough for 90% of
    users.

AV: Norton is not that bad if you switch off certain
    features (like script checking),
I have been using it for more than a year but I dropped
    it. I have been using
many freeware ones but frankly netiher AV nor any other
    program detected
any single virus on my system (due to filtering
    attachments see below).

BTW: Outpost firewall has a very good feature that filters
    / renames
certain e-mail attachments. Using this feature for over
    one year I can say
that this is all I need.

      Hello,

Norton Antivirus treats EVERY script (JScript/VBScript)
using FileSystemObject as a potential virus,
which is of course not true.

      Norton "specialists/developers" should know that
reading/writing TEXT files is quite normal activity
      having nothing common with viruses.
Instead they popup useless message boxes to
      unexperienced user causing panic.

Personally I consider NAV as useless
      software.

        Hi All,

If someone would please look at the screenshots
        attached.

        I run Norton on a regular basis(weekly).

I hadn't used this AB function before.
        (Snap1.gif)

I elected to stop the function.
        (Snap2.gif)

I went to Norton and scanned the indicated folders, no
        virus found.

I went back to AB to try the export function and got
        this error message.  (Snap3.gif)

I restarted my computer and was able to get to the
        screen in (Snap2.gif) without the
        intervention in (Snap3.gif).

Okay then, so where am I??  Is it reasonably safe
        to use the export function??

        Regards
