NAPM's PMI data

Hi, folks:

I created an AmiBroker file of the official /monthly/ US' National Association
of Purchasing Management's Manufacturing (they have other indices, too) PMI
data, from 1951 to the current March/2001 number. Data before 1/1/1951,
including the PMI data from 1948-1950, cannot be used by AmiBroker, at this
time. This data file should work with both versions of AmiBroker - Amiga or
Win32. (If you got an early version of .PMI, you should update this file.)

An import script was used, so the numbers are as accurate as their web page.
Future data (released at the first of each month) can be added very easily, by
hand. The data file (.PMI) is set up as an index line, no candlesticks or
volumes. The ticker has a leading period, so that the ticker won't conflict
with any currently valid tickers. If you wish, you may rename the file only
within AmiBroker.

The current NAPM number (and other numbers like this) could be used for
confirmation in a trading system: as an oscillator rule - bullish/bearish
above/below 50; or as a contrarian rule - trade with new trends, at the turns
of /extreme/ PMI moves. Notice that, since 1960, there has never been a
bear-trap at the 42 level, but there are a few important ones around 45-48.

Make sure you understand just what this number is, before you use it. It is
the result of a survey of ~1500 purchasing managers, in 20 industries in the
manufacturing sector and, therefore, /may not have any relevance to any
individual trade/. The PMI is an indicator of what purchasing managers are
doing with their money and, therefore, is only an indication of their recent
economic sentiment - bullish/bearish.

You may buy all NAPM index histories and more, as a $61US kit, if you wish.
More NAPM information can be found at www.napm.org.
