It depends on what you are trying to do but in computational science
FORTRAN is superior for a number of reasons. Library of mathmatical
subroutines, dynamic data structures, and parallel architectures.

Fortran still seems to me to be a complete cludge when it comes to display
but interfacing of compiled Fortran with compiled C enables graphics to be
integrated. Writing assembly code to draw a graph in Fortran was for the
birds.
