Starting January 1929 I used monthly CPI figures to adjust the monthly DJIA price. At the beginning of 1984 the CP Index was pegged at 100.  The attached DJIA chart has the DJIA at Friday's close standing at an inflation-adjusted price of 4048 which is below December 1996 inflation-adjusted price of 4066.  If you believe as I do that the CPI does not reflect real-world inflation then the current inflation-adjusted DJIA price should even be lower.
