Floor traders use the term "handles" to describe what bank currency traders
call "the big figure." You might call it a "full point," versus calling it
a tick or a pip. So, in the S&Ps, if price is trading at 1200, a one handle
move is from 1200 to 1201. The ticks [or minimum movement] in the S&Ps come
as 1200.00 to 1200.10, etc.
Another piece of floor vernacular that you may hear is this: "What bracket
did you make that trade in?" That's like asking: "What time did you make
the trade?" This is because each fifteen minute segment has a different
bracket designation and trading cards on the floor are marked with the
bracket period they were executed in.
Because I have been giving seminars to floor traders all summer, some of
the terminology has stayed in my "trade speak," because if I say "big
figure" in a seminar to a floor trader, they generally say, "You mean
handle, right?"
