I just ordered a 250Mb RAM Dell Dimension 3000. i also
bought 1 1Gb memory stick to add memory once the system
arrives. Concerned w/the issue you mention i've done some
research that may apply here too.
According to their 3000 service guide you really should
run matched memory sticks in both slots. If you run slower
memory in one slot the system runs at the slower memory
speed. If you have mismatched sizes the system will use
all memory available at a "slightly reduced speed". Just
how "slightly reduced" is not mentioned.
So my guess is the boot message is wrong and that the
system can and is using all 1.5Gb of RAM. The question is
how much faster it may run if you only use the 1Gb stick.
If you check this out could you let me know.
