I would add that Dow Jones published a book in 1980 (edited by
Phyllis Pierce) entitled "The Dow Jones Averages 1885-1980".

This contains daily closes from 1885, daily closes and NYSE volume
from 1897 and daily H-L-C from 1928.

You should be aware, however, that the Dow averages have a number
of "break points" at which there were major revisions in the basket
of stocks in the average, so that the time series of closes is not a
smooth one.

For example, there are three different averages ( a 12 stock, a 14
stock and a 20 stock average) covering various and overlapping
periods from 1885 to 1896. Moeover, there was another major change
in 1915 which dropped the industrial average from 73 to 53 because of
a change in the basket of stocks.
