Howdy Dr. John,
Ballard Power,
mostly known for developing fuel cells power for autos in
conjunction with Ford and Chrysler aka Daimler
Benz, says it will soon offerl
fuel cell power plants suitable for individual
electric power generation.
Separately, Long Island
Power, has a McDonald's running on fuel cells as
a pilot project and uses fuel cells for 1% of their
overall power generation.
A parital answer to the
black out, that the 'power' structure doesn't want to hear, is that individual
power generation for primary or back up electic would mean
less dependence on the grid. Tax incentives for
alternative energy sources could
put the electric companies in the back seat.
For the past three years, I have been heating my swimming pool with solar
panels. The only cost was the initial investment of about $3,000,
which is what a heat pump would have cost. To do the same using an
electric heat pump could cost as much as $250 per month for electric in the
winter and heat pumps only have a 5-7 year life expectency. I have no
doubt recovered my $3k investment via electric savings in about 3
years. The system is expected to last 10-15 years and is viturally
maintenence free.
